Polyphonic Playground is a newly commissioned, site-specific interactive musical installation by Studio PSK and Reeps One, which showcased in December for the first time at Art Basel Miami in Wynwood. Inspired by the inherent joy of visiting playgrounds as a child, the installation encourages adults to re-discover the experience of play. Combining the archetypal elements of a playground – swings, slides, climbing frame – with the musical mastery of Reeps One’s voice and Miami’s local soundscape, this one of a kind play area transforms into a multi-dimensional musical instrument when used.
The structure is made up of a timber framework, built to recreate iconic playground equipment in adult-proportions. Combined with custom electronics, printed textiles and BARE conductive paint, each component gains an added dimension, offering a new level of interactivity.
The installation in Miami marked the launch of a series of appearances. Various iterations of the project will be produced over the coming year, engaging with different audiences and transmitting varying soundscapes from across the world – channelling each urban city’s acoustic environment into a lively and versatile instrument.
